Christmas Dining Chair Covers That Add Holiday-Movie Charm
Every year when the holidays roll around, I love finding small, simple ways to make my home feel extra festive. This season, the dining area in my kitchen got a little dose of Christmas cheer with handmade slipcovers for the chairs.
I wanted something that would feel cozy and soft, the kind of detail that makes you want to linger at the table a little longer after dinner. With just a few yards of fabric these festive covers came together so easily. I’ll share with you exactly how I made them so you can dress up your own dining room for the season too.

These scraps of red and white plaid flannel fabric are all that was left of 5 yards of fabric that I used to add festive color to my kitchen this year for the holiday season.

I made Christmas plaid print chair back slipcovers for the dining chairs around my kitchen table.
I don’t have a dining room so this table is a workhorse for just about everything we do at home, including where I am writing this post.
It is where we have everyday meals as well as special occasions and holiday dinners where I like to go all out and set a festive table setting to celebrate holiday dinners in style.

I got to thinking… “but what about the rest of the time when we are sitting at the table, eating breakfast, lunch and dinner?”
I wanted to make these ordinary times and meals feel more holiday like and decided one way to do this that wouldn’t take up precious table space was to make Christmas plaid fabric chair back slipcovers for the chairs.

I have made and wrote about quite a few slipcovers for my dining chairs over the years. I have made them so many times, I can whip out a set in a few hours now.
- Here are the instructions on how to make dining chair slipcovers like these: How to Make Dining Chair Back Slipcovers
They do require a sewing machine, but if you don’t sew and would like to create covers for your chairs I have posts on how to easily make No-Sew Chair Back Covers.
Some of these chair back covers were made in a chair back runner style and I even have made instant chair back covers using pillow cases.

I don’t know why I didn’t think of making festive chair back slipcovers for past holiday seasons, but I think it came down to finding affordable fabric and getting them made before the holiday rush starts.
I am so happy that when I was at Hobby Lobby last week all Christmas items including Christmas fabric was 50% off.
I didn’t know this going into the store and was wondering why the parking lot was so full. As I entered the store I noticed right away how crowded it was and found out the reason was the 50% off sale.

I needed a yard of fabric for each chair. I previously made the chair cushions using Sunbrella fabric from a broken outdoor umbrella. It was a great repurposing decor project.

I am not an expert sewer and don’t strive to become one. When working with a plaid fabric though it is nice to try to match up the pattern at the seams.
I could do this on some of the covers, but not all since I only bought a yard for each chair and did my best. I couldn’t be happier with the festive look they add to the kitchen.
I also like how my big red candle coordinates with the plaid fabric. I love how this candle looks on the table hence the reason I place it on the table every Christmas season since I got it quite a few years ago now.

I haven’t fully decorated my house for Christmas yet, but one nice thing I found about getting the chair covers made has gotten me into a festive mood, which of course is always a nice frame of mind to be in.

There’s something extra special about adding handmade touches to your holiday decor, especially when they make a space feel as welcoming as these chair covers do.
They’re proof that you don’t need to buy decorations to make your home shine for Christmas. All you need is just a little creativity and a cozy idea that can completely change the mood of a room.
Whether you make a set for every chair or just a few to mix in, your dining area will feel instantly more festive and full of holiday spirit.
If you make a set for your own dining room, I’d love to see how you style them. Share a photo or tag me so everyone can admire your festive touch! And if you’d like more cozy decorating ideas like this one, be sure to join my email list so you never miss a new project.

Very cute chair covers!
These are so good!! I hope you bring them out every holiday season. I’ve been wanting to try an ornament diy, you take small fabric strips & mod podge then onto a round ornament. It would be so cute if you made some out of your scraps! Even if you put the ornaments all in a bowl instead of hanging on your tree, if it doesn’t go with your tree theme. Or, get a table top tree & hang them on that, & place it somewhere else in your house, like your foyer or kitchen.
Hi Holly – I plan on using the chair covers every year now. Thanks for the idea about how to use the fabric scraps on ornaments. They would look very festive and cozy too. :-)
Your slipcovers turned out perfectly and they set off the wood of the chairs and enhance the outstanding view of your lake! You are so clever and resourceful!
Thanks Sue – I am so glad I finally got my act together to make the chair covers. They really make the space look festive without taking up any space. :-)
Matching plaids is tricky even with a simple project, so good job on the chairs!
Thanks Teri – I could have bought extra yardage so I could perfectly match every seam, but was trying to keep on budget so I did my best. :-)
What a great idea!
Thanks Deanna :-)
I love plaid and these look great!! Thanks for sharing-they add just the right amount of early Christmas cheer!
Thank you Tiffanie :-)
They are so festive, a nice pop of color for this room. Perhaps the leftover scraps could be turned into a wreath. Just by tying on the small scraps you can cover one of those wire wreaths and hang it on one of the windows. I bet you could use every last bit of those scraps or add some solid red or white fabric!
Thanks for the idea about using the fabric scraps I have left over to make a wreath – that is a great idea. I think I am going to use them on my tree and will be sharing what I did with them in an upcoming post where I will also share your idea to inspire other readers.
Absolutely love your cozy holiday chair covers! Such talent! You were in the right place at the right time to find the fabric on sale too. Maybe you could use the scraps for a bow in the greenery around the candle base, or sew together strips of the fabric and form into an old fashioned rag rug ball for your centerpiece.
Thanks Deanna – Great ideas for using the scraps. I will be sharing what I did with them in an upcoming post. I will also share your ideas in the post to inspire other readers. I hope you have a very Happy Thanksgiving.
Those slipcovers are so festive!! I love the plaid ❤️. You did an awesome job of matching the plaid perfectly for a seamless look! 👏 Bravo
I’m thinking about getting out a couple of my small trees for the entryway. Keeping it pretty simple with battery lights for starters. There are quite a few houses on my street already decked out!!! I think we need the happiness of the holidays in our lives about now. 🎄❤️
Thanks Lynn – I agree with you that I think we all need some happiness and comfort in our lives now also. In my area, I haven’t seen much holiday up yet, but over the past two weeks on the trips I have taken to Hobby Lobby, the store was packed with people buying Christmas decorations. I think we are all hoping for comfort and joy this holiday season.
Love the chair covers! So festive and cozy to sit there and enjoy that beautiful view ♥
Thanks Susan – My kitchen is truly the heart of my house. The view of the lake from the table is the second best view from the house. The best view of the lake is in the guest room above the kitchen – the one that the tree crashed through during Hurricane Helene. From that room you can see much further past to the larger section of the water. I never take it for granted that I have such a nice view to look at all day long. :-)
Love these chair covers! They look wonderful and add a lot of Christmas cozy.
Thanks Kim
Seriously, Diane?!! Your chair covers are gorgeous! Clever, clever, very designer. Easy to picture cozy joy around your holiday table. As seasons change, perhaps other fabrics for chair covers or a picture frame. You’ve got our wheels turning!
Hi Char – So happy that I have got your wheels turning. If I come across a great looking fabric I just may make more for different seasons.
I’m very much an autumn gal, so still enjoying the browns and oranges and reds and greens of fall around here. But your plaid covers made me smile. They just seem so cozy, easy and welcoming, as opposed to formal, fussy and for looks only. Makes me want to pop over for a cup of tea with you!
Hi Molly – I am an autumn gal also, but as a blogger I have to get my ideas ready for the season for readers and since I need photos, I have to start earlier than I would like. I am still in autumn mode and enjoying seeing the fall colors and the cooler temps outside. I wish I could have a cup of tea with all my readers. Maybe Ai one day will be able to make that happen. :-)
I like it! Nice and cozy.
Hi Melanie – Thanks :-) Now I am ready to start doing a little bit more each day.
Just lovely! I have never liked the more “cutesy covers” but I love yours! Would you share where you found the glass candle holder(not sure what else to call it) around your red candle! Thanks so much,Elizabeth
Thanks Elizabeth – I bought the candle holder at Target many years ago. It is my favorite piece of decor. I love the seed/bubble glass. I have tried to find similar ones to link to for readers over the years, but have never found one. :-( Here is one that is similar, but different. https://bit.ly/4p3njI8
