My Plan to Refresh The Blue Guest Room

With the holiday season soon approaching and before my calendar starts to fill up with festivities, I wanted to give the blue guest room in my house a refresh for the family and friends who will be staying in the room over the holiday season.

If you are new to my blog, then you know my husband Ed and I are empty-nesters so the two bedrooms on the second floor of the house we use as guest rooms. I call one the pretty room that has a more feminine vibe and the one I want to give a refresh, I call the more masculine blue guest room.

On the bed in the blue guest room I still like the super-easy headboard that I made using a plaid flannel sheet and a curtain rod. I made it quite a few years ago and it has held up well and hasn’t faded.

I also will keep the furniture and the thrift store lamp that I made over to resemble a high-end designer one.

The blue quilt on the bed and the shams though have faded from the bright southern sun and repetitive washings. I also change that out in the winter with a navy blue velvet quilt for the bed, but it is a lint magnet and takes too much effort to keep it lint-free.

Refreshing the Bedding With Quince

I have used the Navy Blue color on the bed since we moved into the house. It looked nice with the lake view setting and the plaid headboard.

But you know me. I like to see change and have been thinking of changing the color to a pine green that will coordinate with all the pine trees right outside the sliding glass door in the room. After searching online, I finally found just what I envisioned for the room from Quince.

Have you heard of the brand Quince yet? If not, Quince is a direct-to-consumer brand founded on a simple yet refreshing idea that luxury doesn’t have to be expensive.

By streamlining their production and selling directly to customers, they’re able to offer incredibly well-made pieces at prices most of us can afford.

I have seen the brand online and thought they just sold clothing, but I was surprised to find out they carry quite a nice selection of furniture and home goods like this Organic Cotton Hand-Stitched Quilt and matching pillow shams all sold at a fraction of what you’d expect to pay.

With the color change for the bed to pine green, I also want to update the throw and found this Luxury Fur Throw for when guests want to take a cozy afternoon nap, but don’t want to get under the covers.

I love the way fur throws feel against my body and use them now in every room, not just in my living room to cuddle with when binge watching TV or reading a book long into the night.

To complete the bedding, I ordered a new duvet cover. I thought of getting it in a color, but like using white so it feels like a hotel. The one I have has yellowed with age so seeing a nice pristine one on the bed will make me smile big time.

I haven’t received the bedding yet, but as soon as it comes I will refresh the room and show you how it all comes together. I may even add a few more new details to the room to add to the new color vibe.

I’d love to hear if you’ve bought anything from Quince and if so were they clothes or home goods?

Oh, I LOVE the handstitched quilt and pillow shams! I have so much bedding already that I haven’t been attracted to more until I saw the ones from Quince. I’m definitely going to check that store out. I am eager to see how the guest room evolves — you’re sure to make a quality-yet-comfortable place for your guests to lay their heads by starting with the classy quilt and pillow shams.

  5. Hi Diane
I’ve bought purses which I love. Also quilts also good. Cashmere sweaters are wonderful.

Hi Linda – They sell so many fashionable items with great price tags. I didn’t know just how many. Eagerly awaiting my first order to arrive on my doorstep.

  6. As usual Diane, your Decorating journey and topics are timely and thoughtful. My daughter has helped come up with a theme of our newer SC home 🏡 of Organic Modern ( I’m leaning transitional overall). This bedding is inspiring & just the thing we need to update and refresh as company is already coming from Alaska in late October.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Laura – Very exciting that your new home is all coming together and that you are decorating it with an Organic Modern touch with a bow to transitional. It sounds beautiful. I am sure your Alaskan guests will enjoy staying with you.

  7. I have been buying nothing but Quince bamboo sheet sets and bamboo quilts for quite some time. They are the only sheets I will use now-so luxurious. I think you are going to be very happy with your purchases.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Missy – I like and sleep on bamboo sheets and will need another set for my bed soon. Thanks for taking the time to tell me that the sheets are luxurious. I will buy my next set from Quince.

  8. I have several of the Quince cashmere sweaters which I wear all winter long. They are soft and keep their shape and you can not beat the price.
I will be interested to hear how you like their bedding.

Hi Deb – After ordering the bedding, I spent a good amount of time perusing the site and saw many things I liked. So far in the apparel dept, I ordered a pair of faded black jeans. I will post about the bedding once it arrives and I get on the bed and photographed.

  9. I can’t wait to see the refreshed room. I love the pine color for the bedding. I’ve not ordered anything from Quince, but have a friend who ordered a purse and cashmere clothing from there that she really likes.

Hi Deanna – I am eagerly awaiting for the quilt, shams and other bedding arrive on my doorstep. I know when it does, I will drop everything and start adding it to the guest room. I will post about it as soon as I get it done.

  10. Nice. Refreshing is always a good thing.
I found a similar comforter also in green, velvet.
The holidays will be here before you know it.

Hi Karen – I agree with you, the holidays have a way of sneaking up on us, so I figured I gotta get it done now. I also know that after mid October I will have something new to keep me busy.. a new grandson. :-)
